Comic
masters the Smothers Brothers, had yet another sold out Weill Center crowd
in knots with their special brand of entertainment and song.
Considered ahead of their time, masters of timing, and practitioners of
timeless comedy, The Smothers Brothers are saluted as time-honored legends
whose lengthy career has surpassed all other comedy teams in history.
With their singular blend of comedic and musical talents, the irrepressible
brothers have made a sweeping impact on diverse generations of fans. Such
lasting power is a testimonial to their intuitive humor, natural warmth,
superlative showmanship and the pure unadulterated joy they bring to audiences
of all ages.
The Smothers Brothers' first professional appearance was at The Purple
Onion in San Francisco in 1959 and their first national television appearance
was on The Jack Paar show on January 28, 1961. Over four decades of audience
have seen The Smothers Brothers in their own prime time comedy series
in the '60s, '70s and '80s, guest appearances on numerous television programs,
countless engagements as headliners in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe,
a hot-selling video, twelve top-selling albums, as well as continuous
coast-to-coast concert tours, some with symphony orchestras.
Tom and Dick's contributions to the entertainment world throughout their
careers are so highly respected that the Museum of Broadcasting in New
York produced a retrospective and seminar on their work, an honor not
lightly accorded. On the other coast, Hollywood ceremoniously distinguished
them with one of its most valuable awards: a star on the noted Hollywood
Walk of Fame. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is now studied in universities
across the country as an important factor in the revolutionary changes
undergone in the U.S. during the '60s. The Millennium has brought new
honors including a reunion of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour at the
USA Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and Honorary Doctorate degrees from
their alma mater, San Jose Sate University.
The Rotary Concert Series was launched this year as a new fund-raising
vehicle for Sheboygan Rotary. Rotary's efforts will generate funds to
support the YMCA Camp Y-Koda Astronomy Trail and the Historic Sheboygan
Theatre in the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts. Rotary
has provided more than $500,000 to projects such as Rotary Riverview Park,
the Harbor Centre Marina, Above & Beyond Childrenıs Museum, the Rehabilitation
Center of Sheboygan, YMCA and Camp Rokilio. Rotary has also been a leader
in providing scholarships and programs for youth such as Camp Enterprise,
the World Affairs Seminar and the Student Rotarian program. In 1985, Rotary
created Polio Plus a program to immunize all of the worldıs children
against polio by the year 2005. This Rotary goal is today being met via
financial support, volunteerism, and eradication advocacy.
